Learning Spanish - Spanish is NOT the Official Language of Spain

Let’s talk specifically about the Spanish language or as they say in Spain Español; well at least when comparing Spanish with other languages. I know I can already hear you saying, even this is also more complicated than you thought, but it is all part of the subject of languages and is not peculiar to Spain. 

Many countries have different languages within a language, Germany for example has Bavarian and China has Mandarin and Cantonese. The Spanish speak different Spanish languages in different regions of Spain. In Madrid for example you will find “castellano” Castilian, from the Castile region of Spain. In Barcelona you will find “Catalan”, in the very North of Spain you will find the Basque Country where yes you’ve guessed it they speak a different Spanish. There is also “Galician” in Galicia and in Andalucía and the Balearic Islands the dialects are so strong it sometimes sounds like another language.

Interestingly the majority of Spanish speakers live outside of Spain. We have Latin America and Spanish as spoken in Latin America is a whole different subject. Spanish speakers yes, but as I am sure you will have guessed by now, quite a different Spanish, due to accent, regional dialect, metaphors, different use of the same word and lots of new words emerging in isolation from the mother country.

The official language of Spain is “castellano” as opposed to “las demás lenguas españolas” which is a term used to describe “the other” Spanish languages of Spain.
