Today Alhaurin el Grande is a busy town situated about 20 minutes drive inland between Malaga and
Marbella. This ancient, with its smaller hilltop neighbour,
Alhaurin
de La Torre, today is a town with all the modern amenities of a thriving expatriate community, living alongside the longstanding Spanish villagers. There are new residential developments mushrooming on the perimeters of the town, restaurants and bars in the old town, and even golf clubs along the valleys.
However, in the surrounding countryside there are traces of not only the Neolithic people, who once lived here, but also the Romans and Moors who followed them. By the time the Romans arrived, there was an already well established village, which they renamed Lauro Nova. The surrounding hills were fertile, temperate, forested and laden with valuable mineral deposits. As the Romans thrived here, they built their villas all around the village and still today the remains are there to be discovered on the hillsides. The Moors too recognized the value of this well endowed area and left their mark and a new name - Alhaurin el Grande (Garden of Allah).
For those interested in architecture, in the village there is the 12th Century Moorish archway, the Arcos de Cobertizo, and in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, with its superb view down the valley, are three Roman columns which were discovered close by.
