Almogia
Almogia is a small traditional Spanish town located approximately halfway
between Malaga and
Antequera. It is nestled at the foot of the Sierra del Hacho
mountain range and its name means “the pretty one”. The town was fortified
during its occupation by the Moors and there is evidence that the Romans were
also present nearby. The main industries of the town centre on almonds, olives
and esparto grass. In fact Almogia was famous for its hats made from esparto
grass that were worn by Spanish soldiers during the 19th century.
Main Tourist Attractions
Those who love history and architecture will fall immediately in love with
Almogia. The chapel of Santo Cristo dates back to the 17th century but witnessed
many modifications in the 19th century. It is still a fine example of
traditional Spanish church architecture. The church of Nuestra Senora de la
Asuncion is built on the site of an old mosque and is a wonderful example of the
Mudejar style. Arguably the greatest attraction of Almogia is its castle,
Hins-Xan-Biter. Dating back to the time of the Caliphate it has been used as a
fortress and a prison through its years. It is now in ruins after being attacked
by the French during the War of Independence. Nearby Antequera is also a wealth
of Spanish historical features and has a number of museums and parks. Also being
in the proximity of Malaga, visitors can visit attractions such as the famous
Picasso Museum.
Shopping Opportunities
Almogia has a variety of shops but not as many as you will find in larger
Spanish locations. Holiday and everyday essentials can be bought as well as some
clothing, shoes, local handicrafts and souvenirs. Antequera has some small
family-run shops and a shopping centre. You will find a small range of clothing,
shoes, pottery, art, jewellery and gifts. There is also a large shopping centre
in Malaga which will keep shopaholics amused for hours. You will also find some
chic fashion boutiques and designer label stores in Malaga.
Eating out and Nightlife
There are many restaurants and cafés to be found in the town of Almogia. With
many ex-pats choosing to settle in this quiet and peaceful setting, the menus of
the restaurants reflect the choices of either traditional Spanish or favourite
international dishes. Other cafés and restaurants can be found in abundance in
either Malaga or Antequera if you fancy a night out and a delicious meal.
Almogia has several bars which are a casual affair and sometimes have music to
entertain patrons at the weekends. There are no discos or nightclubs and the
evenings are very low key. If you want to dance the night away, numerous discos
and nightclubs can be found in either Antequera or Malaga.
