Alora property finding service
Alora
Alora is a small village situated 40 kilometres to the north of Malaga off the
road to
Antequera. It is a typical Spanish pueblo with whitewashed houses and
narrow cobbled streets. It sits amongst three hills on which stands the ruins of
its castle. Alora was home to the Spanish novelist and poet Cervantes in the
16th century. The village also gained independence from Malaga in 1628.
Main Tourist Attractions
The ruins of Alora Castle will please the history buffs. The castle was built by
the Phoenicians and the Romans added to its fortifications. The Visigoths
destroyed the castle in the 5th century but it was restored to its former glory
during the period of the Moors. For those who love thrills and spills quad
biking through the countryside and forest is also based in Alora. Walkers will
love the opportunity to take a trek up and down the surrounding hills &
mountains, to take in some of the most breathtaking views of Southern Spain. For
the sun worshippers, nearby Malaga has some beautiful beaches where you can
relax in the sun or take part in watersports including parasailing, windsurfing
and jet skiing. The immediate surroundings of Alora also offer visitors the
opportunity to ride horses, play tennis and golf. One of the best times to visit
Alora is in the month of June when they hold their Flamenco festival; this is an
important celebration for the village as it is rumoured that Alora is the
birthplace of Malagueno Flamenco.
Shopping Opportunities
The village has several shops which cater for the everyday needs of residents
and visitors alike. As well as the opportunity to buy clothing, shoes, perfume,
jewellery and pottery, Alora is known for its castanet making. You can purchase
some ornate castanets to remind you of your special time in Spain. A short trip
south means that shopaholics can spend the day on the rock of Gibraltar,
haggling with the stall holders in the brightly coloured bazaars. Nearby
Antequera has a mixture of family-run businesses, as well as a modern shopping
centre on the outskirts of the town. Malaga is also well known for its range of
designer boutiques and exclusive shops.
Eating out and Nightlife
Alora has several cafés, restaurants and bars for visitors to enjoy. The menu is
mainly local as this typical Spanish village is true to its traditional roots.
Typical fare that can be found in Alora includes Revuelta (scrambled eggs with
vegetables and spring onions) and Sopa Parota (garlic soup with croutons). Those
who have a discerning palate can enjoy some international dishes on offer.
Nearby Malaga and Antequera can also offer a wide variety of places to dine,
with both Spanish and international dishes.
There are no nightclubs or discos in the small village, thus the evenings are
very subtle. Most visitors to this peaceful village are content with a bite to
eat and some tasty Spanish wine. A myriad of bars, discos and nightclubs can be
found in Malaga and Antequera. Here you will find live entertainment as well as
karaoke, cabaret and live music.
