Campillos
Campillos is a charming, traditional Spanish village located approximately 30
kilometres to the east of Antequera. Like many other towns and villages in
Spain, it has seen history from many years ago and has suffered invasion from
the Christians, Visigoths and Moors. It has kept its rustic charm and is a key
stop on the railway line to Granada.
Main Tourist Attractions
Many people visit Campillos for its stunning architecture and historic
buildings. A must see is the Iglesa Parroquial Nuestra Senora del Roposo, which
is a beautiful church, located in the centre of the town. A hermitage of the
town’s patron saint, Ermita de San Benito, is also a popular attraction. The
ruins of the Castillo de Gobantes are perched above the town and will be a hit
with history enthusiasts. Nearby Antequera offers visitors the chance to see
Roman baths, burial mounds and Moorish castles. Not far from Campillos is the El
Torcal natural park, where you can enjoy some walking and bike riding. Campillos
also holds very important and vibrant festivals in July and August every year.
Shopping Opportunities
Shopping opportunities are limited as the town is a typical traditional pueblo.
You will find family owned shops that sell the everyday and holiday essentials
such as shoes, bags and souvenirs. There is a supermarket and an indoor market
held in the centre of the town. Antequera offers more shops that have fine art,
pottery, linen and furniture. Malaga is an hour’s drive away and offers a host
of shopping opportunities with its mix of old and new boutiques. There is also
an El Cortes Ingles department store and the upmarket pedestrian shopping
precinct, Marques de Larios. In the other direction, just under two hour’s drive
away, is the Golden Mile of Marbella.
Eating Out and Nightlife
For its size, Campillos offers a range of restaurants, bars and cafés. You will
find the usual Spanish fare, including some local dishes, namely stews. There is
also a Chinese restaurant to cater for those with differing tastes. All serve a
fine selection of Spanish and international wines. Nearby Antequera has a few
eateries for visitors to savour.
There are no discos or nightclubs in Campillos or the immediate surrounding
area. Evenings are spent strolling the traditional streets of the town and
taking in the rustic atmosphere. You can then sit down in one of the cafés, bars
or restaurants and enjoy some delicious food and a bottle of wine.
Partygoers will have to take the trip to Marbella or Malaga to dance away until
the early hours of the next morning.
