Cartama
Cartama is a Spanish town located approximately 20 kilometres from Malaga. It
lies at the foot of two small sierras and is at the head of the Guadalhorce
Valley. It was a luxurious place during the Roman period, with plenty of bath
and villas. Its main export was marble and valuable raw materials were mined
from the nearby mountains.
Major Tourist Attractions
Cartama is a popular draw for many walkers, mountain bikers and hikers. There
are plenty of challenging terrains around the town to enjoy. Atop the mountains
are the ruins of the old castle which also gives stunning views of the valley
below. The Church of San Pedro is a must see and it has a museum attached at the
rear. Opportunities for horse riding, tennis and badminton are available in the
area surrounding Cartama. A short journey to Malaga will allow visitors to
experience the Picasso Museum, an old Arab fortress and a Roman amphitheatre. As
well as this there are plenty of beaches which offer the chance to soak up the
sun or do some jet skiing, diving or windsurfing. There are also many green
spaces to relax in as well as plenty of sculptures and fountains to admire.
Shopping Opportunities
Cartama has several small shops and a supermarket for buying the holiday
essentials on your trip to Spain. The quick journey to Malaga will present a
paradise for those with some serious shopping in mind. There is an El Cortes
Ingles department store which offers items including shoes, handbags, clothing,
hats, jewellery, perfume, watches, ceramics, furniture and gardening equipment.
The Marques de Larios is the prime location to splash a bit of cash. Here you
will find a trove of designer shops and boutiques where you can purchase some
really expensive items. International fashion houses and brands have their homes
here and you can shop until you drop.
Eating Out and Nightlife
Cartama has several cafés, bars and restaurants which serve up local
specialities and traditional Spanish cuisine. Some of the eateries also have
international cuisine on their menus. A vast range of wine and beers can be
enjoyed with your meal.
There are no nightclubs or discos in Cartama. Evenings are mostly spent
strolling through the streets and stopping for a friendly drink with the locals.
Those looking for a more vibrant scene can head to the lights of Malaga where
you will find live entertainment and music in abundance.
