Casabermeja is a beautiful Spanish pueblo that lies on the side of mountainous
terrain, approximately 20 kilometres north of Malaga. It is an agricultural
haven and is surrounded by olive and almond groves; the blossom in the early
part of the year makes a spectacular sight on the drive into the immediate area.
The village is steeped in history and the name of the village is thought to have
derived from the Moorish name for the area, Q’sar Bermeja, which means “red
castle”.
Main Tourist Attractions
Within the village, there are several attractions that visitors enjoy during
their stay. This includes the Church of Nuestra Senora del Socorro, a collection
of religious buildings that date from various centuries. The Torre Zambra, a
13th century Moorish tower is located just outside of Casabermeja. It offers the
opportunity to take in the local landscape and offers spectacular views across
the countryside. Probably the most renowned sight in the village is the
cemetery, which has a mixture of different tombs. It is unique in the fact that
the bodies are buried above the ground and from a distance the cemetery looks
like a village in its own right. It is so unique that it was named as a
historical monument in the 1980’s. A half hour drive will take you to the city
of Malaga where you will find many things to do including the Picasso Museum,
the 19th century bullring, a Roman amphitheatre and the beach.
Shopping Opportunities
The shopping opportunities available in Casabermeja are more limited than other
areas of the Costa del Sol. There are family owned businesses who offer visitors
the chance to take home some local handicrafts including ceramics, pottery and
esparto grass items such as baskets. Shopaholics will have to take the journey
to Malaga, which is a shopper’s paradise. As well as an El Cortes Ingles
department store, Malaga has the Marques de Larios shopping area. This marble
lined avenue of expensive boutiques and designer outlets will keep shoppers busy
for hours.
Eating out and Nightlife
The village has several cafés, bars and restaurants which all serve typical
Andalucian dishes. You can have the Spanish staple, Tapas, or try some local
specialities including rabbit meat in garlic. If you are venturing into Malaga,
there are a host of establishments that offer everything from Chinese cuisine to
vegetarian specialities.
As a typical Spanish pueblo, Casabermeja does not have a lively atmosphere in
the evening. Most residents and visitors spend the time chatting and eating,
accompanied by a bottle of wine and some spectacular views of the countryside.
