Casarabonela
Casarabonela is a beautiful Spanish town which lies approximately 45 kilometres
inland from
Malaga and 58 kilometres from
Marbella. It has a long history and
architecture from the Moorish period still features prominently in the town
buildings. The town lies at the foot of the Sierra Prieta Mountain and is part
of the Sierra de las Nieves natural park. It is the perfect location if you like
the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, but like to be free to venture to
vibrant cities and towns in the Costa del Sol region.
Major Tourist Attractions
Due to its location, Casarabonela is the perfect base for walkers, mountain
bikers and hikers. Its proximity to the mountains and the natural park make it a
haven for exploring the landscape and taking in the breathtaking views.
Activities such as paragliding, canoeing and horse riding are available on its
doorstep. There are also the ruins of the castle of Qasr Bunayra, thought to be
of Roman origin. If you are looking for sand and water sports, a short drive to
Malaga or Marbella will oblige. Either of these two areas will offer great golf
courses such as the Santa Maria in Marbella and the Parador Golf Club in Malaga.
Carratraca is about half an hour north of Casarabonela and offers the chance to
take in an award winning sulphur spa. To the east of the town is
Alora, where
history lovers can explore Alora Castle.
Shopping Opportunities
There are a limited number of shops in the town; they cater for the everyday
needs of the local residents and tourists. For some serious shopping, Malaga or
Marbella have a lot to offer. Malaga has the renowned Marques de Larios which is
lined with boutiques and fashion houses. There is also an El Cortes Ingles
department store where you will find items to buy such as toys, electrical
goods, furniture, clothing, shoes, hats, jewellery, pottery, fine art, ceramics
and wonderful souvenirs. Marbella’s
Golden Mile is an expensive area with many
designer label watches, perfumes, clothing, shoes and handbags.
Eating Out and Nightlife
There are many small cafés, bars and restaurants to choose from in Casarabonela,
which all serve traditional Spanish meals. You will find a few also cater for
tourists who may prefer international cuisine from countries such as France,
Italy and Britain. All of the surrounding pueblos such as
Alozaina, Alora and
Pizarra have wonderful restaurants, cafés and bars should you feel like a change
of scenery.
There are no lively nightclubs or discos in Casarabonela. To let your hair down
until dawn, a trip to Malaga, Marbella,
Fuengirola or
Torremolinos is required.
