Cortes de la Frontera is a typical Spanish pueblo situated between the
Alcornocales Natural Park and the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. It is
approximately 33 kilometres south-west of
Ronda and 90 kilometres inland from
Marbella. The main economy of the town used to come from the cork trees in the
surrounding forests and many of the buildings in the main street of the village
reflect the wealth the town gained from this enterprise.
Main Tourist Attractions
The village is a perfect base for those who love nature. As well as being able
to explore the terrain of the surrounding natural parks, visitors can enjoy
activities such as bird-watching, mountain biking, potholing and horse riding.
The town has many beautifully ornate buildings to admire and on the outskirts of
the village is a hollowed out rock that was used as a place of worship in the
10th century. The village is also home to one of the largest bullrings in the
Serriana de Ronda area. About 15 minutes drive from Cortes de la Frontera is the
La Cueva de la Pileta, a serious of caves where you can view some pre-historic
cave paintings.
Shopping Opportunities
There are a number of good shopping areas in the village where you can purchase
essential everyday items as well as clothing, shoes, toys, souvenirs and art.
There is an indoor market where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables; you may
also be able to pick up a few bargains and practice your bartering skills.
Nearby Ronda has many colourful bazaars where you can buy shoes, clothing,
souvenirs, postcards, antiques, ceramics, pottery, art and ornate linen. For
serious shopaholics a day trip to Marbella will offer a range of expensive
boutiques and designer outlets on its famous Golden Mile.
Eating out and Nightlife
For a small village, Cortes de la Frontera has a plethora of restaurants, cafés
and bars for visitors to enjoy. As well as the staple Spanish dishes such as
tortilla and Tapas, it is well worth trying the local specialty of veal. In the
autumn months, wild boar is even added to the menu!
There are no nightclubs or discos to be had in the village. Evenings are spent
in the typical rural Spanish fashion, namely some wonderful food, lovely company
and a splendid bottle of wine. A trip to Marbella,
Puerto Banus or
Malaga will
give partygoers the opportunity to savour the vibrant clubs and pubs that the
Costa del Sol has to offer.
