Los Barrios
Los Barrios is a small Spanish town located approximately 14 kilometres west of
San Roque and 10 kilometres from Algeciras. The “route of the bull” starts in
the town and it provides visitors the opportunity to see many aspects of the
bullfighting life of Spain. Los Barrios has a special feel to it and is unique
as all of the crossroads have been turned into roundabouts each with their own
amazing sculpture in the centre. The town is a perfect base to access the
whitewashed pueblos of the Costa del Sol and enjoy excursions to Gibraltar and
Tangiers.
Main Tourist Attractions
The village has one of the newest bullrings in Spain which was built in 1998.
There is also a Natural History museum and the Iglesia San Isido Labrador
church. The house of the Doncellas is an interesting building which was used to
protect the virgins of the town from the French troops during the war of
Independence. Nearby San Roque is home to six golf courses and offers a range of
sports including tennis, rock climbing and polo. Algeciras has one of the
smallest churches in Spain located in its main square. You can also take day
trips to Morocco from its port.
Shopping Opportunities
Los Barrios is home to one of the largest commercial shopping centres in
Andalucia and so it is a paradise for shoppers. Under its roof you will find an
abundance of items for sale including toys, electrical goods, gardening
equipment, sports clothing, jewellery, perfume and shoes. It also has a factory
outlet which stocks a range of international designer labels at reasonable
prices. If you have exhausted your cards in Los Barrios, San Roque also has a
small shopping centre. Algeciras also has a number of fashionable boutiques and
from here you can cross to Gibraltar to wonder around the bazaars.
Eating out and Nightlife
Los Barrios has many bars, restaurants and cafés to sit in and watch the world
go by. Because it is located near the coast, seafood is a prominent feature on
the menu. It offers a mix of cuisine, with influences from Spain, North Africa
and Britain. A fine dining experience can be enjoyed in the upmarket restaurants
of nearby San Roque.
The nightlife in Los Barrios is thriving and vibrant, with a large nightclub
situated underneath the bullring! There are many discos, bars and nightclubs on
offer and many have live entertainment.
