The Costa del Sol started to become popular in the late 1950s when the little fishing village nearest to Malaga airport,
Torremolinos, started to cater for tourists.
The coast has since then developed Westwards away from the airport towards Gibraltar. The towns of
Marbella and Puerto Banus established themselves as the ritzy, jet set places to be in the seventies and eighties and the stretch of coast between these towns became known as the
golden mile. Here you will find 5 star hotels and luxurious multi million euro villas.
In recent years the coast further west has been developed and the stretch between
San Pedro and Estepona has become known as the New Golden Mile. Some extremely luxurious developments have been built such as Los Granados Playa, Mar Azul, Cabo Bermejo, Torre Bermejo, Menara beach and El
Presidente.
In keeping with the 5 star, luxurious style, last summer saw the opening of Laguna village - a very smart beach side shopping centre with high class restaurants and beach bars. This compliments other fine restaurants such as Tikitanos and the many established 5 star hotels like The Las Dunas, Agfa and the
Kepinski.
As an indication of how this stretch of coast is becoming the new golden mile, in the last couple of years, Crowne Plaza, Hyatt International and the Hilton group have all opened 5 star hotels in the area. Disney are rumoured to have targeted the area for a new Disney park and work is already underway to extend the coastal railway system from Malaga.
