Ojen
Ojen on the C-337 before reaching Monda, is situated above the valley of the Rio Real at an altitude of 650ft, bound by the Sierra Blanca and the Sierra Alpujata. It has a population of around 2000 and is growing steadily, but manages to remain unspoiled in spite of its accessibility via the newly upgraded road connecting it to
Marbella. Ojen used to be famous for the production of the anise liqueur, aguardiente, a daily tonic taken with morning coffee by many Spaniards, and was once a major part in the town's economy. Today, there is a lovely old museum showing the towns history and selling Jerez, Malaga wine, and aguardiente to locals and tourists alike. The narrow, cobbled streets also house several good restaurants and bars.
Close by, in the Serrania de Ronda, is the Refugio de Juanar, now a hotel popular with tourists and hunters. The Serrania is still a hunting reserve, once popular with the royal family of Spain, where ibex, wildcats and eagles can be found and is a favourite destination for ramblers and hikers who come to enjoy the mountain air and the stunning views.
