San Roque
San Roque is a village that is located between
Torreguadiaro and
La Linea de la
Concepcion in the region of Cadiz. It sits on a hill that is 109 metres above
sea level and offers great views of the ocean, the Gibraltar peninsula and the
shoreline of North Africa. It is a lush green area, rich with vegetation and
stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Due to its proximity to three
different nationalities (British, Spanish and Arabian) it has a unique mix of
all three cultures.
Main Tourist Attractions
San Roque is a haven for all things sporty. As well as 6 golf courses, it offers
opportunities for rock climbing, hiking, walking, swimming, polo and tennis.
There are also many water sports available including parasailing, diving,
windsurfing and jet skiing. Nature lovers will love the opportunity to go bird
watching or explore the plant life in one of the most stunning forests in
Europe, the Pinar del Rey. A short journey to the rock of Gibraltar will fill
history and naval buffs with excitement. There is a Moorish castle and a system
of underground passage, known as The Galleries, which was used during periods of
war.
Shopping Opportunities
As well as the small local shops, San Roque offers a small shopping centre. You
will find a range of goods including furniture, clothing, shoes, bags, leather
goods, souvenirs, gardening equipment, art, perfume, jewellery and watches.
Sotogrande has a few local shops to browse around and holds an arts and crafts
fair twice a week. Many visitors to this area of the region take themselves off
to the brightly coloured bazaars on the rock of Gibraltar. Here you will find an
array of bright and cheap goods. Many stall holders welcome the visitors who try
and haggle a better price! For those desperate for a larger shopping
opportunity, Marbella’s
Golden Mile is under an hour’s drive away.
Eating out and Nightlife
San Roque is a very upmarket area and has a wealth of excellent bars,
restaurants and cafés to choose from. You will find an establishment that caters
for most tastes. As well as Tapas bars and the traditional Spanish cuisine, you
can enjoy dishes from countries such as Britain, Morocco, France and Italy.
Nearby Sotogrande also has a wealth of superb restaurants by the waterfront of
the resort.
There are no nightclubs or discos in San Roque but you will find a pleasantly
calm and subdued atmosphere. Evenings are spent strolling through the village
and then sitting down with a bite to eat with the friendly locals.
