San Pedro de Alcantara
San Pedro de Alcantara is a real Spanish town, once an ancient farming community famous for sugar cane and fishing, today San Pedro is refreshingly unspoilt. Only 10 kilometres west from razzamatazz of
Puerto Banus, yet just a few minutes drive away from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountains, it is ideally located for touring the area.
The central plaza with its attractive parish church and surrounding narrow streets packed with local shops, cafes and bars and the Thursday street market is a bargain shopper's paradise. San Pedro’s ‘feria’ is the last of the season in Andalucia, making sure that it ends with a bang in the second week in October.
Take a walk along the wide new avenue from the town centre down to the seafront ‘Paseo’, the attractive, promenade flanked by palm trees and ‘chiringuitos’ (beachside restaurants specialising in fish dishes), used by locals and tourists alike for their morning jog or evening stroll.
Of particular archaeological interest is the Paleochristian Balisilica Church and Necropolis located in the woods next to the Bora Bora Beach Club on the sea front. And also a little further west along the beach to
Guadalmina is the restored remains of the Roman Baths, next to the Guadlamina Beach Club.
